Abstract

Objective: To address the issues of adulteration with fritillaria thunbergii (Zhebeimu) in the clinical application of fritillaria hupehensis (Hubeibeimu), insufficient systematic research, and the scarcity and limited scope (characterized by singular indicators) of current quality control studies. This study aims to provide a reference for the quality control and systematic research of fritillaria hupehensis. Methods: This paper comprehensively reviewed literature retrieved through systematic searches of core domestic and international academic databases, including CNKI, CBM, VIP, Wanfang, PubMed, and Web of Science. It collated data on the herbal textual research (Ben Cao Yan Ge), identification techniques, chemical constituents, and pharmacological/toxicological properties of fritillaria hupehensis. Based on the quality marker (Q-Marker) theory, potential quality markers were selected by evaluating three key aspects: component specificity, correlation with traditional efficacy, and correlation with traditional medicinal properties. Results and Conclusion: Fritillaria hupehensis possesses a long history of medicinal use, traceable back to the Tang Dynasty. Accurate identification can be achieved by integrating traditional morphological and microscopic characteristics with modern chromatographic methods (e.g. TLC) and molecular identification techniques (e.g. DNA barcoding). Its primary chemical constituents are alkaloids and terpenoids, accompanied by minor components such as aliphatic hydrocarbons and alcohols. The bulb exhibits pharmacological effects including cough suppression, expectorant, anti-asthmatic, antihypertensive, and anti-tumor activities. While demonstrating high safety following oral administration, its toxicity increases markedly with intravenous administration, necessitating strict adherence to the traditional oral route in clinical practice. Based on the Q-Marker theory, potential Q-Marker include the specific component hupehenine, over 10 unique alkaloids (e.g. hubeirine, hubeidines), and content-specific alkaloids (e.g. peimisine, isoverticine).
