Effect of Qingjin Huatan Decoction on the Nrf2/HO-1 Signaling Pathway and Symptom Recovery in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Abstract

Objective: To observe of the effect of Qingjin huatan decoction on Nrf2/HO-1 and symptom recovery in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD). Methods: A prospective study was conducted on 118 COPD patients who visited our hospital from September 2023 to May 2025, and a parallel controlled trial was designed. They were divided into a control group and an experimental group using a simplified random number table method, with 59 cases in each group. The control group received conventional Western medicine treatment, while the experimental group received Qingjin Huatan decoction combined with conventional Western medicine. The syndrome scores, Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway proteins, oxidative stress, inflammatory indicators and rehabilitation process of the two groups of patients were compared. Analyze the correlation between Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway proteins and clinical indicators. Results: After treatment, the scores of symptoms such as cough with yellow phlegm, chest stuffiness and asthma, fever and thirst and restlessness in the experimental group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). The relative expression levels of serum Nrf2 and HO-1 in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). The level of SOD in the experimental group was higher than that in the control group, while the MDA, WBC and Neu were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). The relief time of dyspnea, cough, sputum and activity tolerance in the experimental group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). Nrf2 and HO-1 are positively correlated with SOD and negatively correlated with MDA, WBC and Neu (r=0.745, -0.802, -0.739, -0.779, 0.795, -0.773, -0.725, -0.719; P<0.05). Conclusion: Qingjin huatan decoction can alleviate the clinical symptoms of COPD patients, and has a positive effect on reducing oxidative stress, inflammatory response and accelerating the recovery process of patients. Its mechanism of action may be related to the activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway.
