Abstract: Objective：To understand the knowledge of the basic medical staff in Kunming on the national essential medicine system, and to provide references for the further implementation of the national essential medicine system in Kunming. Methods： A self-made questionnaire was used to investigate the cognition and implementation of medical staff in 72 grassroots medical and health institutions in Kunming, and a statistical analysis of the survey data was conducted. Results：A total of 891 valid questionnaires were issued and returned. The overall awareness rate of the interviewed medical staff about the essential drug system was 89%, and the average awareness score was (7.87±1.67), which was related to academic qualifications, professional technical qualifications, professional categories, and number of training sessions. The level of economic development and the unit′s implementation of the essential drug system are related (P<0.05).Conclusion：The basic medical staff in Kunming City have significantly improved their awareness of the national essential medicine system, but they are not timely and inaccurate in their knowledge of essential medicines. In terms of implementation, the implementation of the essential medicine system is not strong enough, and the frequency of publicity and initiative are insufficient. It is recommended that health departments improve the management level of primary medical institutions and strengthen relevant training for primary medical staff.
